People shouldn’t have to DO anything or BE something for us to love them.
Sometimes I think I enable the lie that for me to love you, that you have to do things for me, buy me things, or be a certain way. This bothers me, because thats not love. It’s lust, when I ‘love’ you because of your status, or what you have, or what you do for me. I hate that.
The way that God loves, the love that we, who claim to belong to Christ, have been called to and given, is unconditional.
It is a love that will still love you when you look your worst,
A love that will still love you no matter how much money you have.
A love that will still love you no matter what you ate this morning.
A love that will still love you if you don’t shower them with gifts.
A love that will still love you even if they do shower you with gifts.
A love that will still love you even if you haven’t showered in a week. (or washed your hair, in my case!)
A love that will still love you no matter your faults.
A love that will still love you no matter how badly you have hurt them.
….do you get the point?
This love that loves us even though we __________(fill in the blank), no matter what, the love that never leaves, or forsakes, the love that perseveres and is steadfast and immoveable…this is the love we have been given. This is the love that we should be giving.
How can we, sinful humans, give this love? We have to first receive it from our Heavenly Father. And thankfully, we have been given His Holy Spirit, who is the reason we can give this love, because HE is greater than our sin and purifies us.
“We love because He first loved us.” 1 John 4:19
If you know Christ, but struggle with receiving love, especially His love, I beg of you to fight through your ‘I’m not worthy” thinking, because Christ clearly thought you were worth it when He died for you. And you can’t know what true love is, until you have experienced God’s love.
“Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends”
